We really are thrilled anytime we get to work in the pop world. Dressing Beyoncé’s dancers for the VMA’s, Katy Perry for a video, Nicki Minaj and now Pitbull, really we couldn’t be more honored. This is just another example of what all of us fashionistas and latex fans have known for so long; that what we love to wear looks good just about any place.
The time is nigh for latex leggings, rubber masks and all sorts of scary (and sexy) accessories. Every year at this time a full range of super hero costumes make an appearance, as do naughty nurses, bare-chested cavemen and the ubiquitous ghost, goblin and zombie. Then too we shall see the parade of cartoon fluffy cartoon coverings and bespoke Halloween creations.
At the FashioNXT show in Portland recently, we got to reveal our “The New Flesh,” collection (see the pieces here). This show was of a more traditional, classic haute couture setting, and as with everyplace else we have been, we found our time in Portland, glorious.
Walking away from our two days spent ‘doing’ NYCC 2018 we were lovingly exhausted with all we saw and the many people we met. It was a great time and we hope to attend last year, either on the east coast or west. Cosplay, comics, anime and fantasy are alive and well, and we are damn happy they are.
Taylor Swift came in a Balmain long-sleeve, high-neck reflective mini-dress with matching thigh highs boots. Tyra Banks sported a dress shirt, wide black belt (almost a cummerbund actually) and a Gucci red fringe skirt. Dua Lipa was in a classic floor-length white gown with pleaded train. And Cardi B, as we would expect, was dressed in an eye-catching ensemble. She wore a matching floral hat and slit dress with spaghetti straps. Hers was certainly one of the more colorful wardrobe choices of the evening
Latex wardrobe accessories, steampunk hats, wild wigs and spandex, spandex, spandex; welcome to Comic Con NYC 2018. Supposedly this east coast version of the famous anime/science fiction/fantasy/cosplay/comic convention sees even a bigger attendance than the original San Diego version. That accounting might very well be true with all we saw walk below Aquaman’s banner over the weekend.

But what actually happened in the big time world of investments and stock options, was that haute couture accessory player Michael Kors bought Versace, for $2.1 billion. Also, Michael Kors announced they were changing their name to Capri Holdings.
Winning awards, for the second year in a row, for our latex couture on the global WOW stage is an honor we are having a hard time getting our heads around. Sure we are cool and hip alt. wardrobe designers but winning WOW again..man we are blown away! But as we mentioned in our last blog, to be among fourteen other U.S. designers that made the finalists at this year at World of WearableArt Awards Show, invests us of an honor all its own.
Once again latex couture is being celebrated. For the 2nd year in a row, Dawnamatrix has won prizes and placement in The WORLD OF WEARABLE ART competition, and we are beside ourselves with the honor.
As we always do, we will be updating on the new costumes, for 2018. But for now, there has already come a little controversy to what’s being presented in costume wear, one not a costume anyone will be wearing, the other,one somebody could if it hadn’t been already pulled.
When it comes to latex wardrobe, there is bespoke…and then there are BESPOKE. Mostly, when we take a specific request—beyond creating an outfit completely original for a client—we see requests for specific alternations in size, and requests for color. And when it comes to creating wedding gowns we have accommodated some very personal specifications, many a bride want special specifications for their special day.
As Warhol managed with his art, his magazine skirted the trendy as much as the serious, from politics to visual art to film to literature. And despite some financial troubles of late—some seemingly still not completely resolved—the paper magazine beloved by so many is relaunching with a September issue.
Last week Kylie Jenner stepped out in West Hollywood in a skin tight latex dress. Burt Reynolds’ unprecedented string of hit movies in the late 70’s and early 80’s—Smokey and the Bandit, The End, The Cannonball Run, Sharky’s Machine, to name a few—truly made him a superstar. In the early 90’s Reynolds rejuvenated his career by starring in CBS’s sitcom Evening Shade (for which he won his Emmy) and further enjoyed his ‘comeback’ starring as porn director “Jack Horner” in 1997’s Boogie Nights (for which he won a Golden Globe and was nominated or an Oscar).
Though neither are made of latex, two pieces of iconic couture made the news early this week, both ‘from out of this world’: Neil Armstrong’s spacesuit and a pair of ruby red slippers from the film, The Wizard Of Oz.
The Lady certainly wowed the crowd at The Venice Film Festival this week with what she wore, coming in to promote her new film (starring her and Bradley Cooper, who also directed). Sailing into the sinking Italian city on a boat, Gaga was wearing a Jonathan Simkhai bustier LBD dress, an equally black stiletto dangling off the side of the boat she arrived in.
French Tennis Federation president Bernard Giudicelli told Tennis Magazine that William’s body-hugging super hero-like wardrobe “…will no longer be accepted.” He also added the FFT will be scrutinizing designer’s player collections for the play at Roland Garros next year, even though most have already been made. At the time, Williams said her reason for wearing the catsuit was as a tribute to: “All the moms out there that had a tough pregnancy and have to come back and try to be fierce, in the middle of everything. That’s what this represents. You can’t beat a catsuit, right?”
But we are featured as one of three companies/groups/producers questioned, about the current state of advertising. YNOT wanted to know what we do, and for us particularly, how the mainstreaming of alternate haute couture has changed how we’ve approached business in the past few years.
But speaking of color choices and fashion, an overall top 2018 summer color choice has just been named. Yellow has been crowned the ‘new millennial pink’, touted as the color of choice for such fashion trenders like Meghan Markle, Kim Kardashian, and Amal Clooney (who wore a stunning yellow Stella McCartney to Meghan’s wedding) and host of other high-profile, fashion-influencing women.
Miss Madge reigns supreme in the influence of that world where fashion and music meet. Aretha Franklin represents the mix of classic pop/soul hits with an underlying unwavering strain of feminism (not that Madonna does not represent feminism herself in her way). The two women are icons, divas to many (a title Aretha Franklin wore proudly) and have no equal in what they specifically produced.
Queen is the “Anaconda,” “Super Bass,” singer’s 4th album, chock full of the lady’s unique and provocative rap POV. But her wardrobe choices and video styling (some we have reported on already when she dropped the “Barbie Tingz and “Chun Li” videos) are unequaled in the pop field.
While Ocean’s 8 (opened in June) featured a female cast of Hollywood A-listers and is centered round fashions and the Met Gala, Crazy Rich Asians will, by all accounts, give “Sandy” Bullock and her crew a run for their sartorial stripes and prints.
he Avanatgardista Weekend, something we have reported on before, will surely prove to be a big event that we will most likely wish we could have attended. But even before this 2nd annual fetish fashion meet-up in Munich in October, there was the AVANTGARDISTA ROADSHOW.
The ‘level playing field’ here, the runway actually just the cleared space in the museum, not up higher than the audience, brings the models up close and personal in a way that other events can’t usually manage. Yes, it does make the models’ walk on a whole different order, but we found now, in the two consecutive years we have shown at the C&C, that there is an intimacy when a runway is set like this, or on a back patio, or even on the street between a close pressed in crowd.
hen there are photographers on hand (some whose work you see here, others we will showcase in our next blog) to capture the moments. Of course there are the designers giving of their talents and our beautiful, work-til-they-drop models, all making what happens out on the floor an immediate success.
For two years in a row now, we have had such a wonderful time showing our latex couture and meeting such fantastic people, at one of the premier mix cultural events, the Couture & Cars Fashion Show. Sure, we all know how sleek cars and sexy models have become a staple in our culture, more or less from the 50’s on up. But this show, held for the 2nd year at the LeMay-America’s Car Museum, set the whole idea of cars and fashion to a whole other level.
As San Diego International Comic-Con 2018 winds down this week, and the PVC, latex costumes and leather masks and props get pondered, applaud and even envied, designers everywhere are showing how they have been and will be influenced by what wicked this way came this year. And from years before.
We just received word that two Dawnamatrix outfits have been picked to be finalists at the 2018 World of WearableArtT Awards. This marks the second year in a row that we have participated in this global event and also the second time we have made the final nominations! Both out “Foreign Bodies” outfit has been selected to appear on stage in the WOW Awards Show as our “Lady Ethereal” garment.Ben and I are thrilled, to say the least
Kat and Prayer’s singer Leafer Seyer were married in June in a secret ceremony, but a pro shot video of the event was just released for fans and the curious to salivate over. Set center of the invited was a high platform where the couple read their personal vows to one another and later Kat performed Nick Cave’s, “Into My Arms,” on a piano as red as her dress.
The wonderful people at Manifest are presenting their Fetish Fashion Party in Copenhagen on September 15th, 10pm ‘til 4am. Featuring a playroom as well as darkroom, outdoor garden, lake view balcony, cocktails and performances, fashion exhibitions and music, this could prove one of the events worth most attending at the end of summer 2018.
At Coachella this year (renamed “Beychella” after Beyoncé tore the music festival apart with some incendiary performances) the singer and clothing designer Balmain’s creative director, Olivier Rousteing had a meeting of the minds.
As we have blogged about plenty, for the 2nd year in a row we are matching our latex couture with classic and sexy cars at the Couture & Cars Fashion Show. Held down at the LeMay-America’s Car Museum on July 21, in Tacoma, this event is not to be missed by lovers of fashion, alt. design, gorgeous accessories…and of course, smokin’ hot cars. As we draw closer, we felt it might be time to reveal one of the signature pieces we are showing this year.
Once again we were honored to showcase our latex couture on a stunning model, through the lenses of an expert fashion photographer. This time the images from our recent shoot with Paul Allan photographing model Celina Greinke were executed as a promo shoot for jewelry designs collaborations with two very talented alternative accessory makers, Snow Winters of Snow Winters Designs and Han-Yin Hsu of Annxannxdesign.
Spandex trumps latex couture, but who cares when a T.V. show is as entertaining as GLOW? The explosively popular ladies wresting series premiers its 2nd season a few days before the 4th of July, and if the trailer or teaser is any indication the action and comedy this time hits, knocks down and for all intents and purposed pins the first season. What also seems to have been given an uptick is GLOW’s look.
When it comes to featuring latex couture and alternate fashions in her live performances and pretty much any place else we see her, Nicki Minaj is a queen. Yes, Katy Perry, Beyoncé, so many others singers and actresses wear latex bodysuits, tops and latex lingerie on stage, in their videos or just out and about town. But if you caught Nicki Minaj’s performances at the 2018 BET Awards just passed you’d have to admit this rapper/pop star is at the top of the heap when it comes to rockin’ latex.
We should all expect only the most colorful and stylish couture when it comes to Pride Weekends, with latex outfits, lace, and bright color cottons seen across our fine cities. Marches, parties and celebrations of purposefulness as well as celebratory fun is what the whole Pride Month is about and reflected on the streets of so many cities and in the hearts of so many people.
