It’s just neat to read about and get to know the people who truly are artisans behind the camera making these fantastic films. I know from my own POV I am jazzed anytime I see an actor or actress don a mask, slip on a pair of boots, tickle their behind into some latex. But I also know someone is there to render those costumes as well as fit the performer in them. And one of those people is the wonderfully talented American costume designer Judianna Makovksy.
The flyer image here was taken by photographer/magazine CEO Erik Von Gutenberg (see his site, magazine, couture here. This model in this show-Kerri Taylor- is just one of the women we have hired to show-off our new line and we’ve announced all of the ladies this week over on our Facebook page:
The ladies we are thrilled to be working with this year are Nea Dune, Holy Scar, Kerri Taylor, who we have worked with before and Véronique Marcoux, Ramsessa Eros, Paisley Lauren, Carl-André Girard, Crimson Heavens Mira LaFleur and July August.
I liked how more than a few designers-Baci comes instantly to mind-were showcasing ‘alternative’ couture in lingerie. Designing what we do we often find that lots of designers appropriate the label ‘alternative’ simply because they may have incorporated a bit of latex here, created a overtly naughty piece of lingerie there. But as we all know it is a matter of perspective really what is and is not alternative. It’s the old one’s man’s meat is another man’s latex jodhpur quandary.
There was Daniel Radcliffe dressed as Spider-Man, not hiding from Voldemort but more from fans. Peter Jackson was a scary black-and-white jester (he posted some Facebook pics of himself following someone wearing “The Hobbit” T-shirt) and Jack Black went as a storm trooper claiming he simply wanted to be left alone to buy action figures. Game of Thrones Maisie Williams sported a Guy Fawkes mask on the floor then later at a party wore a Ryan Jude Novelline dress made of graphic novel pages. She’s worn this dress before, but it was no less impressive her second time out.
Hedwig, with his East German vibe and suffering a botched sex change is an altogether alternative animal of a totally different stripe and one that can’t be caged in any true category. Even if all you court is a smidgen of alternate theatre/fashion sensibility you are going to love this show…no matter if Rannells or Patrick Harris is starring. There is a true feeling of audience immersion in the main character’s story and a grab-you-and-never-let-go immediacy to this play that one can’t ignore.
Thomas “Doc” Kaminski was hired to ‘document’ the making of “The Misfits” movie (his black and whites are stunning against a desert landscape). Make-up artist Allan “Whitey” Snyder became close friends with Monroe and many of his stunning candid shots were on display. The “Color Photographer’s Wonder Boy” Milton Greenehad big posed shots here. Sound engineer and ‘guerrilla’ photographer Lani Carlson had a celebrated picture of Monroe standing in front of a double-her-size top sheet of sheet music bearing her name (and other shots) and photographer Mischa Pelz’s contribution was truly ‘unearthed’ after an earthquake hit Southern California when Pelz’s assistant discovered them in a shoe box!
Talk about one-of-a-kind super sexy art; modern burlesque maven, fetish supermodel, global fashion icon Dita Von Teese presents the final leg of her spectacular “BURLESQUE: STRIP, STRIP, HOORAY!” show. Coming to Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, and New York for a series of ending dates in September Dita presents a 90-minute show that features some of her most amazing numbers, plus MC Murray Hill and other burlesque stalwarts.
The new line’s name will be revealed in a few weeks and the actual line released Saturday 8/30 at our runway appearance at MFW. And as have we’ve done now for four years, we will also be collaborating with international models and photographers on photo shoots and participating in the Fetish Photo Walk, an organized stroll around Montreal that sees hundreds of the weekend’s attendees enjoying the sights, sounds and smells of Montreal. The residents of Montreal are very welcoming and curious so the walk, as is the entire weekend, is a very positive fun experience.
On hand this year will be authors like Raymond Fiest, cartoon creators like Neal Adams and super celebs like BBC’s Sherlock/Khan/Smaug Benedict Cumberbatch to make fans crazy, Cosplay kids shake and sweat and major news outlets via for stories. Along the way there are panels and talks, previews and a film/T.V. schedule (including sneaks and premier footage) so secretive one won’t know exactly what is being shown until one grabs a program at the convention itself.
If you caught NBC’s airing of the “Miley Cyrus: Bangerz Tour,” on this past Sunday night of the July4th weekend count yourself as one of a small few. The show, two hours of live footage from the controversial twerkers present tour from Spain and Portugal drew a mere 2 million. That sounds like a lot of viewers but seeing as this weekend in the U.S. was one for repeats because of the holiday Miley’s show was the lowest rated, least watched program of the night across American TV sets.
Dressing (and changing) for a video shoot for her new single “High Off My Love” the 33 year old heir-turned-celeb Paris Hilton donned quite a few naughty outfits (5 in fact) and several wigs in L.A. last week. ‘The Kids’ stylists Sammy & Judy selected the looks Paris sported in the hot L.A. sun, styles that were labeled fetish, ‘dominatrix wear’ and downright naughty across the blogosphere and newspapers the past few days.
As we have expounded and opined about/over before, Montreal Fetish Weekend is truly an amazing event of the lifestyle curious, the fantasy live-r, the see-and-be scene-ster. It is also the time when we here at Dawnamatrix reveal a bunch of new designs. To say we are looking forward to Montreal Fetish Weekend 2014 would be a …
Yes, we are paying lots of attention to summer movies here. There were those few blogs about the magnificent Maleficent (the fantasy outfits, hair styles, make-up Angelina Jolie sported were just too fetish-y wonderful to ignore). And we’ve opined about superhero-like fare that’s upon us this summer to. But ‘reality movies’ (in fact a bio pic) can also have lots of wonderful fashion in them and this is certainly case with the super smart suits and 50’s/60’s fashions in the new Jersey Boys movie.
As latex wearers as much as designers we want ever more captivating colors, luscious cuts and sexy styles and if and when we can manage them, certainly prints of outstanding quality and rendering across our latex. We seem to have hit on a very popular ‘trend’, something we certainly did not predict but are thrilled to exploit all the same, our Leopard Print Latex.
Not that the young woman and her family haven’t enjoyed copious amounts of press already but Kendall Jenner really wowed them all at Sunday night’s MuchMusic Video Awards. Co-hosting with her little sister Kylie Kendall sported a Fausto Puglisi long-sleeve gown with sky-high slide slits open all the way up her expanse of pretty leg, …
As much as we go on about fashion, modeling, latex clothing, summer super hero movies, Art in America and good old fetishes there is no ignoring The World Cup 2014. And if you think for a second that there isn’t a fair amount of reporting, critique and just downright amazement of what the players are wearing on the field as much as on how they are playing then you are simply ignoring how much fashion cuts a deep color swatch into modern day sports.
Julia is an 18 year-old high school senior who was simply not content with the prom dress possibilities presented her. With her mom the Arizona young woman purchased a “used” wedding dress (for the pricey sum of $40) and then actually painted upon that dress-painted mind you!-a recreation of Vincent Van Gogh’s Starry Night.
There is no way we could do what we do here at Dawnamatrix without the groundbreaking work women like Bunny Yeager did for fashion, photography and the general exploration and consideration of the full rich possibilities of the nude female form as art. Fantasy-based fashion, sexy costume-ry, fetish iconography all were birthed from the pictures, attitude and daring of ladies like Bettie Page and Bunny Yeager (have you seen the Katy Perry/Madonna ‘Power of Pop’ photos in the June issue of “V” magazine…talk about being influenced!) We as much recognize a talent like Bunny Yeager as we are inspired by her, even more so impressive considering that this lady worked in a time when the types of photographs she took could be, and often were, sited as pornographic and therefore against the law.
We’ve covered Maleficent previously-don’t worry nobody is that scatterbrained round the Dawnamatrix offices that we forget what we write about-but the film’s early popularity seems to be about more than just some cool costuming and effects. Sure Angelina Jolie is a certified superstar and literally inhabits the role of the pure-hearted young lady who grows into an evil forest queen but beyond the $70 million opening it seems the world at large is getting Maleficent-fied.
Beyond the action figures that get launched on the public with a movie of this sort, Este
From Games of Thrones’ Kristian Nairn D.J.ing, to stepping in Dr. Who’s TARDIS, to passing by the likes of Rae Dawn Chong and Parker Stevenson, Team Dawnamatrix made the scene down at Boston’s Pop Culture Expo last week. Certainly a smaller gathering of the faithful and costumed then say Comic Con, still this event at …
Let’s face it; some folks have ‘it.’ An indefinable quality that draws eye and attention, captivates an intimate party gathering or stills a big audience, transcends media, place or time. Charisma, sex appeal, just an unstoppable joie de vivre, call it what you will. We’re happy that a model like Jade Vixen conveys her unique vision of life, her very sparkling essence in the work she does…and especially in the work she does for the Dawnamtrix brand.
As far as lifestyle fetish events go The Montreal Fetish Weekend ranks right up there with the very best. It’s truly a provocative mix of people and events. But what truly makes the event is how the city itself is so very welcoming to the many finely festooned fashionistas making their way in and out of Metro stops, across sunlight walkways on Ste-Catherine street, or in and out of retail shops and restaurants.
At the Danger! Awesome crowdfunded maker space (“crowdfunding” something only possible through the technology of the net) we are licensed to operate the laser cutters for Dawnamatrix projects…some of the results of which you see pictured here. Danger! Awesome in Cambridge M.A.(their Facebook page here are best known for the laser engraving they created for the Ok Go video (see here.
The press was slightly shocked at a recent photocall for her new movie Maleficent when Angelina Jolie showed up at Kensington Palace in a white Atelier Versace dress. Though she was sporting Louboutin heels with a deep red seemingly dripping down the back, Brad Pitt’s lady was looking positively alluring in white. And while we are all used to Jolie looking fetching the public is not so used to the lady in white…or any light color that is.
Working as we do all with tops in the field of latex & alt photography from Erik Von Gutenberg to Antonio Angelo to Mew-Chiel (to name but a few) a recent exhibition of Guy Bourdin reminds us once again of those who were pioneers in this field of fashion alternative images.
Guy Bourdin was a well known presence at French Vogue and the art world in general for four decades. Some of his rare works were on display at the tail end of this April at Paris Photo, L.A.’s, Louise Alexander gallery.
Recently we happened over to the decidedly kinky city of Amsterdam to see our latex breathe, shift and play in a runway fashion show at Dominatrix Amsterdam. The capital city of the Netherlands hosts plenty of kinky events during the year. A goodly amount of ladies (doms) ply their trade with whip, flogger and attitude there. And we knew to truly show-off what we make to lots of folks who care about what about we make Dominatrix Amsterdam is where we just had to be.
This promotional video was just released: https://vimeo.com/m/92428136. It shows model Elena Lee modeling two of our outfits down in the warm climes of Florida’s South Beach, all of us there for the recent Von Gutenberg Ball in Miami. The video production is by Blind Beast, photographs by Antonio Angelo Photography. And Elena is wearing both the Dragon Lady Dress (see here: https://dawnamatrix.com/belted-flare-coat/ and Belted Flare Coat, (see here: https://dawnamatrix.com/belted-flare-coat/)
The Dragon Lady Dress is inspired by traditional Chinese cheongsam dresses and features a laser cut dragon. The flared coat can be (and is the way Elena is wearing it here) a daring alternative couture piece. You can use it to accessorize an outfit, or simply just as an outfit all its own. We of course support any way you want to mix and match your wardrobe.

Yes, summer is coming and with it another round of big blockbusters. There will be comedies and romances for sure, but the alternate wardrobe designer’s heart beats over the spate of superhero movies we know are coming. Captain America: The Winter Soldier has just been released, a second Spiderman movie will swing on in May …
