The World of WearableArt: Getting Better Every Year

Any chance we get to champion the World of WearableArt show, the pack of global designers who participate in it, and how our latex designs have been so welcomed (and won) there, we love to chime in. Receiving this most recent update from The Post of Te Upoko O Te Ika about this year’s WOW, we figured the time was right to show the one-of-a-kind alternative fashion competition that takes place in New Zealand more of our love.

As the article tells us, this year the staging of WOW will allow audiences even more than before. For last year the show’s genius stage designers in Wellington built ramps coming from the stage, allowing models to walk into the auditorium. This year those walkways will extend to the back of the stage. WOW chief exec Meg Williams says in the above piece that the audience will feel models and those amazing WOW designs “brush right past,” giving audiences a better view of the details of the designs, something all who send in a design to be judged work very hard on indeed.

For those seated slightly further back, there will again be super-sized projections of the garments, shot by the Wellington-based Artificial Imagination company. As with all WOW shows, the immersive experience here relies on visuals as much as sound. This year, the audio of the show will cover the entire venue like never before.

The title of the WOW show this year is Rise, featuring a “…cityscape where you become illuminated in the creative spirit, so the cast and all the garments become these communities,” Williams said in the Post piece.

Something she says she hopes will feel like a blast of “sunshine energy.”

The three unique sections that designers have to create for this year’s show are air, neon, and myths and legends. They accompany the recurring categories of Aotearoa, avant-garde, and open.

Any announcement on headline acts is still under wraps. But rest assured we will be posting more about the World of WearableArt during the summer. Yes, prepared to be wowed once again by WOW.
