The 2023 Met Gala

Even though not one of those who attended last night’s Met Gala opted for latex in their wardrobe, one can’t be disappointed at the haute couture seen at the first-of-May extravaganza that had as its theme this year: “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty.”

As expected, there was lots of black and white represented, the celebrities paying tribute to Lagerfeld’s sure favorite colors. Bad Bunny wore a custom, all-white Jacquemus tweed suit, and tie. His ensemble was matched with an extra-long floral cape train, also in white. Nicole Kidman wore an archival, Karl Lagerfeld-era Chanel Haute Couture gown, the very dress she wore in her Chanel No. 5 commercial of 2004 when this dress was first made. Dua Lipa, also in a black and white tweed, but a ballgown, debut Tiffany & Co.’s 100-carat white Legendary diamond. And Rihanna stepped across the red carpet wearing her own ballgown, made by Maison Valentino. She layered the bridal-maternity dress with an ivory-color top cape and hood covered in vanilla rosettes.

Olivia Wilde (in white) and Vogue China’s editor-in-chief,  Margaret Zhang (in black), wore nearly the same dress with its high side cutouts. And Jennifer Lopez sported her own cutouts in a Ralph Lauren dress with a velour cutout section, an “underboob” baring halter, and two long flowing tails.

And while stars like Halle Bailey, Karen Elson, Rita Ora, and surely Rachel Brosnahan went with the naked dress look, the absolute winner in showing themselves off has to be Lil Nas X. The singer wore only a metallic silver thong, clunky heeled boots, and an eye mask, the rest of his trim body adorned in sparkling silver body paint and bejeweled Swarovski crystals and pearls (which covered everything literally from his head to his toes). Even his manicure matched.

Karl Lagerfeld would have been proud of what was seen, worn, and revealed at the Met Gala 2023.
