Oh, Those Wacky Academy Awards: Slaps, Style and The Young Slipping In Over The Old

Beyond Will Smith slapping Chris Rock, there were some other exciting moments at the 94th Academy Awards this past Sunday, although we had no latex fashion. By all accounts, at least from what the “E! Live from the Red Carpet” announcers were announcing, the night was ruled by younger Hollywood stars taking over as much the nominations as the style.

Kristen Steward showed off her long legs, once again, down a red carpet. Nominated for her role as “Princess Diana” in the movie, Spencer the 31-year-old actress wore a Chanel black shorts suit.

Timothee Chalamet went sans shirt, opting for just a long necklace down his bared chest under his embroidered lace blazer, paired with high-waisted pants. His co-star in Dune, Zendaya, wore a stunning Valentino made of a tiny blouse, baring her tight tummy. She paired it with a long skirt.

Kodi Smit-McPhee wore a double-breasted aqua-colored bespoke tux and accessorized with giant shoes.

We did get flashes of brilliance, though, from our more mature stars. Kevin Costner and his wife Christian Baumgartner came dressed in a classic black suit and strapless black and white gown, respectively. Nicole Kidman wore an Armani Prive with a sparkly train. And Jada Pinkett Smith, who would go on to garner so much attention from what Chris Rock said about her, and from what hubby Will Smith did about what was said, wore a stunning (and stiff) Jean Paul Gaultier emerald gown designed by Glenn Martens. The gown featured a huge ruffle skirt folding out to a long train with a ruched bodice, high neck, and a zipper down its middle.

The see-and-be-scene styling doesn’t end with the actual Acamedy Ward broadcast though. The ‘after parties’ see plenty of wild and stunning wardrobe choices. Two, in particular, that seemed to stand out across the social media melee were Emily Ratajkowski showing up at the 2022 Vanity Fair Oscars after-party in a strapless orange top with a split down the center, held together by sheer panels. She paired her open shirt with a column skirt.

And showing that hair controversy doesn’t begin and end with the Smiths and Rocks of this world, Julia Fox attended that same party as Ratajkowski in what might be the most alternative fashion style of the night. Wearing a black leather gown featuring a neckline of hands clutching up her neck, the Uncut Gems star accessorized with a black purse made of human hair.
