Ok, so now we know what they were wearing at the 2021 academy awards

One could pine for genial hosts telling silly running jokes, over-the-top over-long musical numbers, maybe a pop star wearing some lace or latex couture, but the 2021 Academy Awards wasn’t anything like shows of old. Good or bad? Well, the jury is still out (actually, ‘the jury’ seems to be debating the merits of the broadcast across the web currently).

At least we had the fashions.

As we opined in our last blog, the stars and their stylists were out to make a showing at this show that proves always to be the showiest of Hollywood shows. Although reconfigured for a hall in Los Angeles’ Union Station, the historic Art Deco spot certainly added to the glamour, and the stars didn’t disappoint. Margot Robbie wore a spaghetti strap gown of silver floral print over black lace. Halle Berry was in a strapless sweetheart-neckline pink Dolce&Gabbana and Carey Mulligan a train-tastic two-piece Valentino. Viola Davis went with a modern fashion choice in her laser-cut white tunic with the strategic see-thru material.

For color, we had Andra Day in a bespoke Vera Wang Haute dress of gold. Her cut-out waist and a hip-high slit made this a very sexy wardrobe choice, to be sure…and the entire piece was made out of metal. Zendaya was in gold as well (‘neon’ yellow actually), sporting her own long train in Valentino Haute Couture. Travon Free wore a suit of black with gold accents (the interior of his jacket a list of the names of black victims killed by police) while Leslie Odom Jr. resembled the Oscar statue dressed in his golden double-breasted Brioni.

The other standout color choice was the cobalt blue hue of singer H.E.R.’s lacy sheer jumpsuit with a cape. This was the lady’s homage to Prince (according to H.E.R.’s designer Peter Dundas), who wore a lacy blue jumpsuit with a hood to the 1985 Oscars.

As far as accessories, one could note shoes (H.E.R. wore 6-inch platforms), clutches, and certainly jewelry the stars sported this past Sunday. But two of the standouts have to be Celeste holding a clutch shaped as an anatomically correct human heart with her Gucci gown. And Laura Dern, in a long-sleeve Oscar de la Renta gown with feathered skirt wearing a crystal chain across her black pointy-toe pumps.
