Superhero Couture In The Marvels Trailer

PVC, possibly some latex, new iterations on classic costumes, and lots of female power; there is much to unpack in the just-released The Marvels trailer. Featuring characters Kamala Khan, played by Iman Vellani, Monica Rambeau, played by Teyonah Parris, and Brie Larson’s Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel (with some Samuel L. Jackson Nick Fury thrown in), the trio of ladies are working together here.

The tagline of the film: Teaming up changes e̶v̶e̶r̶y̶t̶h̶i̶n̶g̶ everyone.”

Starting in Earth’s orbit, Fury and Rambeau seem to be working with the S.A.B.E.R. space station base. Rambeau, in a white space suit with brown and red material accents, plus a helmet, gets zapped when touching “the Point,” out there in space and teleported away. She’s replaced by a frightened and excited Kamala Khan, in the same space suit and helmet, floating outside the space station windows, thrilled to see Nick Fury.

Rambeau is thrown to a dark planet, where blue-skinned Kree soldiers immediately set upon her. Looking pretty much as they always have, the baddies do sport a new helmet.

Whatever happened to Rambeau and Khan also happens to Carol Danvers (Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel) as she explodes through a closet via an extended version of Ms. Marvel’s post-credit scene. Completely confused to be in her biggest fan’s room, Danvers sets her ‘tude as well as her stance in her iconic suit.

Probably the most interesting couture here is not a superhero costume at all, but in the shot of Danvers in a colorful floaty costume (with hat), once again seemingly confused, surrounded by dancers dressed just as colorful, seeming recreating a Bollywood moment.

When the trio of ladies finally get set for action, it is interesting to note Kamala Khan is in a costume riffing on her Ms. Marvel look, accented with white and more arm padding. And fans of Captain Marvel will note that in the latest iteration of her famous once-piece, Larson sports the signature red and blue, but they are much darker.

Indeed, these is not all of the cosplay influencing couture that we will see in The Marvels. But we will have to wait for more trailers or the movie when it arrives in theaters Nov. 10.
