Met Gala 2025, Exhibition & Event

At the end of this week, before the ‘Oscars of Fashion,’ which will take place this coming Monday, we have to wonder again about what we may or may not see when it comes to latex couture at the Met Gala. With this year’s costume exhibition titled ‘Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,’ the Gala’s dress code of “Tailored for You,” we can really expect anything, as the museum celebrates “Black dandyism.”

Fingers crossed that dandyism could include our favorite textile.

Colman Domingo, Lewis Hamilton, Pharrell Williams, (and more) co-chair the event, with Anna Wintour, of course. Then there are Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Jeremy O. Harris, and Janelle Monáe (also to name but a few), serving as host committees. Inspired by Monica L. Miller’s 2009 book, Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity, this year’s exhibition will be presented in a dozen sections, including Distinction, Disguise, Freedom, Champion, Jook (leisure activities, as defined by Zora Neale Hurston), and Cool (again, to name but a few).

You can see a run-through of some of the exhibit’s pictures here: Inside the Met Gala 2025 Exhibition: ‘Superfine: Tailoring Black Style’ Photos.

As to what is arguably the most talked-about fashion event of the season for celebrity-hungry fans and fashionistas, the Met Gala’s ‘red carpet’ walk-in on Monday will see the usual round-up of A-listers. A high-priced dinner follows, where phones are actually discouraged (although always snuck in as seen from what’s posted across various Instagram accounts posted that night) the attendees are at tables set by a seating chart determined by Anna Wintour…as the New York Times tells us.

Sure, there will come the usual round of Gala after-parties you’d expect, and all the ‘who-wore who?’ ‘Did you see that gown?’ Tuesday morning sartorial quarterbacking. But the Met’s exhibit runs until October 26th, with the money the gala raises (millions actually) going to the museum’s continued operation.
