Even though the temperature was freezing enough to get anybody’s teeth chattering, and we didn’t truly expect to see Mariah Carey in a latex outfit, we were still riveted by the lady’s performance on this year’s Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest. Out to redeem herself this year, both the 47-year-old diva’s singing and couture certainly knocked us out.
Like all of you, we waited we with bated breath over how Mariah might come across in Times Square this time around. As we all might remember the controversy of her last year attempt when Mariah’s onstage monitors became problematic, at best, during her two-song attempt of “Auld Lang Syne,” and her hit “Emotions.” The Twitter barbs and online accusations that went back and forth between the singer and Dick Clark Productions all seemed to be mended for this year and in that so extreme cold NYC night Mariah performed “Vision of Love” and “Hero” flawlessly.
But we were especially struck-as we will be by costume designs all the time-by the white fur coat and a crystal-covered low cut nude gown Ms. Carey wore. Surely we all know how cold (and hot) it can get in extreme temps wearing something sexy, see-thru, tight or made of alternative materials. But other than making a quip about needing some tea-in what seemed a scripted moment-the lady bore her onstage time well, standing with her coat open, taking some tentative steps around, even as her gospel choir formed around her wearing the long robes that they were certainly holding closed.
Host/producer Ryan Seacrest ruminated to PEOPLE about the show’s past production woes with Ms. Carey, when he said:
“That’s live TV. These are live big events — things happen, things go wrong, it’s part of the excitement. It’s part of the adrenaline rush, and we truly don’t know. I don’t even know how the show feels until someone calls me the next day and goes, ‘That was okay.’ I have no idea what it looks like on TV when we’re doing it.”
Mariah sounded, and certainly looked, more than ok, we feel.
Happy 2018 to all.
