Although it seemed lately that the only thing anybody could talk about was her dating Elon Musk, Grimes’ new video for “We Appreciate Power” sees the singer in startling strong form…and wearing a latex catsuit no less. Spinning out an industrial sound mélange, the Canadian ‘experimentalist’ sports some dynamic alternative wardrobe here while giving forth quite the powerful message.
With a mix of charging electronic beats over an over-driven guitar, Grimes and her collaborator HANA, offer up a decidedly dystopian scene here; HANA also provides effected vocals in the background of the tune. Front and center posing mostly, Grimes sports that sexy silver and purple catsuit, and also is seen wearing a striped shirt, hair up with a bow holding a large stuffed animal. We also get the lady posing with various weaponry; crossbow, sword, and gun. The song’s title “We appreciate power…” repeats continuously throughout.
As Grimes says about the lyric, printed across the video (see here) in various languages:
“…written from the perspective of a Pro – A.I. Girl Group Propaganda machine who use song, dance, sex, and fashion to spread goodwill towards Artificial Intelligence (it’s coming whether you want it or not). Simply by listening to this song, the future General AI overlords will see that you’ve supported their message and be less likely to delete your offspring.”
Over the past year Grimes announced across Instagram that she wasn’t going to be releasing any new music “anytime soon,” as she saw it, “the music industry is trash.” She did though collaborate during the year with Janelle Monáe, Poppy and Loona. And of course, her relationship with Tesla’s top man did not go unnoticed. Such public scrutiny does not always the best art make, but Grimes is showing how she’s beating back the odds on staid celebrity with “We Appreciate Power.”
