Out of all the award shows we try to cover, looking for latex couture or some unique red carpet alternative wardrobe, the BET Awards never disappoint. The annual show, (the 21st of this particular show happening in 2021!) was held this past Sunday night. It proved to be a costume/wardrobe extravaganza we can’t help but comment on.
The hostess for the evening, Taraji P. Henson, rocked a startling dozen-plus outfit changes. Making her red-carpet entrance in a body-hugging Versace that featuring quite the startling slit, the Empire actress then paid homage to Black female icons by taking turns dressing as Diana Ross, Erykah Badu, Tina Turner, and H.E.R (to name a few). A gold lamé jumpsuit with cape, ruby sequin fringed dress, and a sequin catsuit were only some of what Henson changed into.
Not that she changed as many times, but Megan Thee Stallion managed to get into two different white ensembles for the night. Entering Los Angeles’ Microsoft Theater, the lady rapper was tucked into a flowing Jean Paul Gaultier. It sported the designer’s iconic cone bra design and two sexy hip-high slits. Later, Megan changed into a white gown with feathers and sequins, sporting more slits and, this time, cutouts.
Megan Thee Stallion won four BET Awards this night.
When performing with Offset, Cardo B. wore a bespoke embroidered Dolce & Gabbana that sported a sheer front panel to show off her baby belly. Andra Day, who also won an award, wore a see-thru mesh corset top tucked into a mint-green paneled skirt with over matching pants for her performance.
And continuing to make fashion as well as music news, Lil Nas X managed to change outfits too…two during his red-carpet walk-in.
His blue-and-white Andrea Grossi gown was part of the designer’s Welcome to DeusLand collection. Crafted through “sustainable techniques,” his zippered corset, jacket, and white suspenders were covered in historical illustrations, seemingly symbolizing war and religion. The second outfit the “Old Town Road,” singer wore was a ’70s-inspired floral pantsuit from Richard Quinn’s fall/winter 2021 collection, sporting crystals, and beads.
Kissing one of his male dancers during his performance of “Montero (Call Me By Your Name)” (and making quite a bit of news, pro, and con), Lil Nas X once again was attired in Egyptian-like cosplay.
So, technically, he managed three outfit changes at the 2021 BET Awards.
