Latex couture, wild send-ups, banging rap lyrics, movie tie-ins and provocative poses, the week that just past saw quite a few interesting videos ‘drop.’ We told you about that Deadpool 2 “Ashes’ video parody; we’d be remiss if we didn’t mention Nicki Minaj’s latest for the songs “Chun-Li” and “Barbie Tingz.” Especially seeing as Ms. Minaj offers up a dizzying array of eye-catching costumes, many made from our most favorite material.
“Chun Li,” has Minaj working Asian iconography in her own wild way. Of the two, this is the video that features lots of latex, fetish fashion and also ‘lots’ of Nicki Minaj. Fishnets with latex bodysuits, a ‘Light-Brite’-like one piece of black latex featuring red lit-up tubing, and even a latex third body suit that pretty much dares the limits of physics staying in place across Nicki’s attributes. This is a smoky Noir romp of a film based around Nicki’s lyrics of super confidence.
“Barbie Tingz” is more ‘sporty’ and colorful. Again we lots of Nicki, especially in an opening shoot of her in knee-high boots, cloth top and G-string. But she’s also dressed with her dancers in full Victorian haute couture, bounces by in crop top and shorts and in what is the most arresting costume piece, she wears a bell-shaped yellow rubber dress with an equally rubber pink top, rubber bracelet ‘donuts’ and purple tights.
Add to it all, Nicki Minaja’s hair accessorizing across both videos viewers are treated to alt. couture at its most hip and wild.
As unafraid to show herself off as to make full use of textile art in all its various splendor, Minaj is definitely one of the leaders in this particular pop arena. Watching “Barbie Tingz” and “Chun Li,” we know we are getting a high-water mark of video costume design that is pretty much the cutting edge of what is out there and, most importantly, what’s coming.
