It certainly seems women’s political fashion has become blogger fodder more than ever before, though so far we haven’t caught any high-profile wife, candidate or Congresswoman in a latex dress…yet. The day after a debate, Democratic and Replication conventions, even ‘simple’ state affairs have fashionistas and fans both critiquing Melania Trump’s wardrobe choices (and the selling of same), the pantsuits style of Mrs. Clinton, even the ‘across-the-pond’ outfit choices of Kate Middleton.
And of course, lots is made over what Michelle Obama decides to take from her closet…or have made.
Mrs. Obama made news this week-and certainly this will be the last time she does so in just this way-when wearing a rose gold Versace ‘chain mail’ gown at the Obama’s last White House State Dinner. Entertaining Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi (who wore Giorgio Armani) and his wife Agnese Landini (who wore Ermanno Scervino), the President and First Lady held this last historic event of its kind with Michelle Obama causing quite the stir days later because of her custom made tight dress…and how wonderful she looked in it.
Mrs. Obama is used to these shows of “sartorial diplomacy,” as The New York Times calls her seeming perfect haute couture moments. The first lady has a knack in revealing, at state dinners especially, gowns made by designers whose backgrounds and cultures reflect the countries being honored at that particular dinner.
“I am humbled and honored to have the opportunity to dress the first lady of the United States Michelle Obama,” Italian designer, Donatella Versace said.
Not just the couture made news here though. Guests were entertained by singer Gwen Stefani, and celebrity chef Mario Batali helped the White House staff to prepare the meal.
At the end of the day a Mrs. Obama, a Hillary Clinton, any and all female political figures will get called out on their style more than men ever will (ah, yes the old double standard reigns supreme here.) But time and again the ladies prove they have the situation well in hand with whatever it is they chose to wear.
