Sure, we might expect a little controversy if a celebrity strips down for a photo shoot wearing next to nothing at all, or maybe a skintight latex outfit. But would anyone ever expect a brouhaha over a celebrity family sitting for a “Family Holiday Card” picture, all wearing pajamas?
What seemed to get the internet crazy last week (and we all know how that wacky internet thingie can be triggered by any number of things) was an ad for actress Goldie Hawn and her daughter actress Kate Hudson gathering their extended family to promote a SKIMS holiday campaign.
SKIMS, co-owned by Kim Kardashian, has enlisted celebrities and their families before for these kind of advertisements. Past participants include Patrick Mahomes, his wife and kids, and Snoop Dogg, to name but a few. What seemed to draw comments and controversy in the Haw/Hudson sit-down was the timing of the ad (two days after the election) as well as the supposed opulence the family was showing.
The brood as much showed off in the Harmony Korine photos wearing limited-edition SKIMS holiday forest green sleepwear, and in other shots, wearing candy-cane red onesies. There was also lots of food being served in the pictures and videos posted, which lots of critics took as an especially decadent show (the food included lobster and big, luscious looking cakes served by butlers).
There’s even a moment when Goldie spills red Jello on the carpet.
And all this happens in what seems to be a rather opulent few rooms.
Whatever you think about this SKIMS ad, the company surely got its money’s worth. As well all know, bad press, a little controversy skimming through the culture for even a few days, had to have earned the company lots of attention.
