Did we see any latex clothing? Cosplay influence? Maybe a rubber mask somewhere backstage? It’s New York Fashion Week 2016…and no Virginia, once again you’re not going to see any fetish wear, not even all that much that might be called alternate fashion.
Kanye West’s Yeezy Season 3 fashion/music show held this past Thursday night did reveal some interesting outfits. The big show held at Madison Square Garden, saw the much publicized entry of Kayne’s in-laws-Caitlyn and Kris Jenner among them-and the first public appearance of Lamar Odom as well as the rest of music mogul’s family celebs. And with superstars Naomi Campbell and Veronica Web in the throng of models showing-off Kanye’s sometimes ripped, often very muted shades, the audience got to gawk at the man’s latest clothing collection (more street couture then alternative though) while hearing his new “Life Of Pablo” album.
Rihanna sent her models out to walk the Fenty x Puma runway in black and white street-wear. The white painted hair and black lipstick on her models was probably the most alternative (actually Goth) inspired part of RiRi’s presentation, but she did reveal changes to the very popular sneaker she introduced last year, with a thigh-high boot with the brand’s name written across its top.
One of her models also sported a body harness…so that’s at least something.
New York Fashion Week, as is true of Mila, London, Paris, is not about presenting the latest in latex corsets, challenging the status quo with a fetish model strutting down the runway, and certainly pushes celebrity sightings now more than high couture. And though we can’t expect to find our next bespoke naughty outfit in any of these fashion weeks, still each year we do dream that just maybe a old school designer, or maybe even a Kanye or a RiRi might try something slightly daring…and of course affordable.
