Cosplayers might surely salivate over sale of sci-fi movie goodies, while latex lovers continue to search for latex reveals at the Met Gala and solid alternatives to tennis couture. It’s to these interests we give you this first-of-September news round-up.
The Continuing John Galliano Controversy
British designer, John Galliano, will not be the subject of an exhibit linked to the Met Gala next year. As previously announced (see here) the Metropolitan Museum of Art, was going to feature a “John Galliano: Horizons” exhibit next year, but a public outcry about hosting/honoring Galliano, pretty much heard the minute Horizons was announced, has reached such a fevered pitch, all parties involved have decided to bow out.
This includes Galliano, Anna Wintour, and all involved with the Met.
“After much reflection and discussion with all those involved, I have decided, with great sadness, that the exhibition shouldn’t take place at this time,” Galliano wrote in a statement released just yesterday. “I remain fully accountable for the pain caused by my words in the past, particularly the hurt I caused to the Jewish and Asian communities.
Galliano is referencing being found guilty in Paris of “public insults” and antisemitic abuse he hurled in a café in Paris in 2021. This led to his firing from Dior in the same year.
Anna Wintour said Galliano stepping away from the Met is “very courageous and a measure of the man he is.”
Tennis Couture At The US Open
Only a week into the U.S. Open, eyes are as much on the play as the players…and what they are wearing. Naomi Osaka and Aryna Sabalenka made the news this week, for two drastically different reasons, over what they wore when playing.
As we have seen with Osaka plenty when it comes to alternate tennis couture, during her match this past Sunday, while playing against Anastasia Zakharova, Osaka wore an asymmetrical gray hoodie, white tulle skirt, her hair in braids, sporting a headband. She also wore one black athletic sleeve, and a red on each arm respectively.
Osaka revealed that she was inspired by NBA fashion icon Allan Iverson, who has drawn criticism for wearing oversized clothes and showcasing his tattoos.
Aryna Sabalenka wasn’t paying homage to anyone at her mixed doubles match at Flushing Meadows earlier in the week. She wore a black Nike mesh dress that clearly showed a bright orange sports bra and matching briefs under it.
Aryna responding the sure criticism she heard with: “All that matters for me is that I love it. For me, it’s super fun. Plus it’s really cool for pictures.”
Grabbing Some Tippett
SFX legend Phil Tippett, who pioneered stop motion and other classic techniques in some of the most famous and foundational sci-fi/fantasy movies of the ‘80s and ‘90s, is retiring. But in doing so, he is also selling off his vast collection to fans.

His amazing credits include the OG Star Wars trilogy, Jurassic Park, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, Willow, RoboCop, to name just a few movies that moved our imaginations.
