Calling it out herself, Dakota Johnson said, “I’m doing what I always do on my birthday, which is stand in midtown in a tight-ass latex dress looking for attention,” before returning to Saturday Night Live this past Saturday to host the show for the third time.
And wearing a stunning red Versace mini, made of our favorite textile.
Scouring the web, as you know we do for weekly mainstream latex couture moments, we couldn’t help but love Dakota Johnson, styled by Kate Young, opting for the body-hugging Versace archival piece from 2013. Accessorizing with ‘peep-toed’ mules, a sparkling Roberto Coin diamond collar (supposedly worth $124,000) and her matching red nails, we opine that even with Taylor Swift showing up to ‘crash’ Dakota’s opening monologue, it was the latex outfit plenty are talking about post-show.
Well, it’s what we are talking about, to be sure.
SNL has seen some very cool fashion nods over the years, as well as some on-the-mark satirical fashion swipes (Maya Rudolph’s Donatella Versace imitation comes to mind). The opening monologue, though, is often the most talked-about personal sartorial part of a guest’s SNL appearance.
Candice Bergen, the show’s first female host, opened her 1990 appearance in Las Vegas–inspired sparkling black dress with crystal panels. Three years later, Nicole Kidman sat on a couch, paying tribute to her then-husband Tom Cruise, by wearing his Risky Business button-down white shirt and socks. Antonio Banderas stripped down to a pink velvety minidress with black leather boots and quite an accentuated bust. Lady Gaga wore a metal mesh, Swarovski-crystal Versace in 2013, and six years later Jennifer Lopez ripped off her tuxedo to reveal an updated version of her infamous 2000 Grammy Versace dress. And one couldn’t miss Ryan Gosling nodding to his character, Ken, wearing a faux fur coat for his opening monologue, the outfit going viral across TikTok just as the episode aired.
We are always on the lookout for good latex couture on SNL, and thank Dakota Johnson for her latest.
