And here we thought the occasional latex wardrobe piece might be considered too sexy….
It seems the 2025 Cannes Film Festival is now banning naked dressing. The grande dame or daddy, depending on your gender POV, of film has banned a fashion trend that many have come to consider de rigueur on the festival’s famous red carpet. Specifically set for nighttime screenings at Cannes’ Grand Théâtre Lumière this year’s dress code restriction off the Croisette now states: “For decency reasons, nudity is prohibited on the red carpet, as well as in any other area of the festival.” Additionally: “Voluminous outfits, in particular, those with a large train, that hinder the proper flow of traffic of guests and complicate seating in the theatre are not permitted. The festival welcoming teams will be obligated to prohibit red carpet access to anyone not respecting these rules.”
Could the rise in naked dressing and the occasional turn from ladies like Bianca Censori have made the festival folks skittish?
Surely there have been copious body part reveals before such current displays from Kanye’s wife. Notables such as Kendall Jenner, Milla Jovovich, Zoë Kravitz, and Bella Hadid more than once exposed lots of skin at Cannes. Will these ladies, as well as others (and men too) adhere to the new restrictions, interpret them in their own way (not all naked dresses are created equal after all), or simply buck the dress code completely? These are A-list global personalities we are talking about here, looking to stand out with paparazzi, folks who march not just to the beat of their own drummer but an entire personal sartorial orchestra. Will they capitulate? And if they don’t, who is going to throw them off the carpet?
The 78th edition of the Cannes festival begins today. And once again it seems movies and fashion, or at least news about them, collide in our cultural soup.
