We can all pretty much count on the yearly MTV Video Music Awards for latex, leather, and other alternate couture. And the show that happened last night at New Jersey’s Prudential Center, hosted by Nicki Minaj, didn’t disappoint.
Always one to make a sartorial statement, Cardi B showed off her impressive curves in a bespoke Dilara Findikoglu gown made entirely of silver hair clips. Her husband, Offset, accessorized with his own silver hair clips, matching his dark suit with its black and silver buckle belt and sparkly thin tie.
One could call Saweetie’s pink Area’s Fall/Winter 2023 couture dress Flintstone-inspired, with its bone-shaped neck and waistline fastenings. And in the only true leather showing of the night, Bebe Rexha wore a black leather dress built around a bustier and rear cut-outs. She added a tail to the ensemble.
Taylor Swift, who made history with her wins and nominations, wore a sleek black high-slit, Versace, while Dojo Cat kept up the baring-body trend by wearing a cobweb see-thru dress with only a tan-colored G-string. Karol G showed off quite a bit of herself in a sheer beige Ashi Studio dress, and Selena Gomez was in a fiery Oscar de la Renta, again with lots of open space showing off her body.
For the boys of the night, NLE Choppa wore a purple fringed suede two-piece suit, and all-male group Tomorrow x Together, this their first VMAs, were in a variety of black, white, and tan oversized suits.
Host of the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards, Nicki Minaj, rocked the Barbiecore pink trend in a wedding-like gown, Dolce & Gabbana. And
lastly, it was less what Ashanti wore— she was in a rhinestone-festooned dress with a front cut-out showing off her bejeweled bra that was shaped like two turtles-and more her accessory that made fans turn their heads. Stepping across the famous pink carpet, she held a clutch showing an old picture of her and Nelly’s on its front. It seems the on-again/off-again couple are back on again.
