We all know cosplay is not just about rendering some latex wardrobe accessory to fit the specific confines of a convention costume you are preparing to wear. It’s as much about showing off one’s talent and aplomb as it is about enjoying a comradery, in person, with persons you might not have known previously or might never see again. And it surely is about community…as Magic Wheelchair makes clear.
At the recently passed 2026 San Diego Comic-Con, which we surely wrote about a bit across the past week or so, the non-profit Magic Wheelchair made sure that kids who use wheelchairs could also enjoy their cosplay dreams. Based in Oregon, Magic Wheelchairs’ volunteers build unique cosplay into, around and all about wheelchairs, at no cost to those who use them, as well as help provide lodging, free transportation and even badges to families for a con. And when the con is over the kids get to take their costumes home.
It doesn’t get much better than that!
From iconic Star Wars characters and vehicles, Stranger Things monsters and pretty much whatever a kid can dream up, the Magic Wheelchair imagineers do their best to create ‘movable’ cosplay with the wheelchairs they ‘dress’. And if just the idea of this amazing organization doing this wonderful work fails to bring a lump to your throat (and it’s pretty much impossible not to be inspired and humbled by just the thought of what they do) see if you get through this video with a dry eye. The smiles on the faces of the younger cosplayers this particular brand of magic engenders, are as priceless as they are beautiful.
To know a whole bunch of families are experiencing comic conventions they might not have been able to attend before Magic Wheelchair got involved, let alone seeing all these amazing costumes the company’s volunteers render reveals to us all the true heartfelt community there is in cosplayers and for folks who want to make fantasies real, even if only for one comic convention day.
