We all know how important it is to accessorize with our latex couture. Gloves, some metal jewelry, or even a mask (especially a mask these days) can add just the right finishing touches to the look we are going for. This week (tomorrow 7/22, actually) accessories of quite a historical significance, owned by Marilyn Monroe, are going up for auction….and some of them are not even real.
Marilyn wore fake pearl earrings and a matching necklace for what has been coined her “Last Sitting.” This was a photoshoot Monroe managed to complete with fashion photographer Bert Stern, a month-and-a-half before she died, on Aug 05, 1962.
Auction house Gotta Have Rock and Roll is holding the auction. They are also auctioning off the Nikon camera Stern used at the shoot (at which he reportedly took thousands of pictures). At one point during this final photoshoot of her life Monroe grabbed that camera while Stern grabbed another and kept shooting.
Other Monroe wardrobe to be auctioned include one of her gowns and a shawl, and black and white checkered pants. Other personal items from the Some Like It Hot star include “The Misfits Original Dressing Room Sign,” and the more ghoulish “Marilyn Monroe and Arthur Miller Handwritten and Signed Medical Miscarriage Contract.”
Not everyone is interested in celebrity haute couture or signed scripts, it seems.
Selling amphora from Hollywood legends, be it clothes, props, or personal items (even very personal ones), is big business. But when it comes to a celebrity as iconic (and sexy) as Marilyn Monroe, whose untimely death still carries a mystery, the items Gotta Have Rock and Roll has are suspected to fetch some very healthy bids.
The estimate is that Stern’s Nikon could go for up to $60.000. and Marilyn’s earrings (even fake that they are) $50,000.
