Being a huge proponent of the various Vogue magazines around the world, as well as seeing quite a bit of our latex couture featured on models in those magazines, when a story about Vogue appears across the web we certainly take a gander. This week there was quite the controversy brewing over Kim Kardashian and Vogue India.
The March issue of that country’s fashion magazine behemoth marks the very first time Kim K. has been featured on a Vogue India cover. Posing for two different cover shots, Kanye’s wife wears a black satin dress, truly an alt. fashion statement, as it sports chain straps. In the other picture she wears a belted red dress with tulle. Inside and out Kim sports Jean Paul Gaultier as well as wearing haute couture from Indian designers Anita Dongre, Anamika Khanna, and Sabyasachi. But it isn’t the designers itchy Twitter finger critics have been weighing in on. It is the fact that a western pop culture star, and certainly not a South Asian model or even a Bollywood actress, was not featured on the cover of Vogue India this time around.
You might recall Kim’s sister Kendall Jenner received the very same kind of criticism when she posed for this very same magazine’s 10th anniversary cover.
Though this ‘first Kendall, now Kim’ backlash has indeed hit and will continue well into whatever next controversy lands across Twitter of Instagram, it is obvious that the popularity of a Kim or a Kendall, or any of a bunch of super popular cultural media superstars or models is what pushed India’s Vogue to feature this lady on its cover.
The 37-year-old Kim Kardashian is a global super star personality, as are her sisters. And personality, celebrity, beauty (and yes even controversy) sells magazines, not just Vogue, around the world.
