Lights, Music, Dancing & The Costumes of Janet Jackson’s New Las Vegas Residency

Known as much for her music, iconic video dance moves, a live TV moment that incurred the FCC’s wrath, and costumes and couture that runs the gambit from latex to lace to everything in between, it’s no wonder that Janet Jackon’s new Las Vegas residency is making news. The two-hour-plus show, playing at Resorts World, sees the 58-year-old singer performing 43 songs covering a wide swath of her celebrated career, from deep cuts for die-hards, hits, some snippets of songs, and full versions and even a live backstage camera feed to show Janet touching up before returning to the stage for an encore.

For those of us with a sartorial interest (and who wouldn’t be interested in what Janet Jackson is wearing on stage this time around?) designer Thom Browne has Ms. Jackson in four distinctive costumes, accessorized with Christian Louboutin bespoke footwear. For the opening Jackson appears in a long black satin jacket, which she extricates from revealing herself in a gold sequin catsuit, necktie and cuffs included.

The first change sees Janet emerge next in a sheer blazer, pants, and corset. This is the first moment of the show when one spies Miss Jackson’s current peak physical condition.

With her third costume, we see Janet Jackson in our favorite textile as the main lady comes on stage wearing a latex corset pairing with sequin plaid pants, and a shoulder shrug. She wears this arresting outfit until she comes out yet again, to sing songs like “Scream,” and “Rhythm Nation,” in a black latex catsuit.

Yes, more latex…thank you Janet!

Just when the audience thinks “Janet Jackson: Las Vegas” is done, the star takes a camera backstage with her to document her undergoing a quick makeup redo, then Janet returns for a two-song encore.

With five backing dancers behind her, the perfect lights and sounds a modern Las Vegas residency provides, her amazing songs, and yes, the couture, indeed some of it latex, Janet Jackson once again shows how she rules our hearts, minds…and the stage.
