So, we got lucky to hook up with Robert Kelly owner/artist of Dark Seed Creations to get the specific skinny on his latex creation that caused all that ‘is-it-human-body-parts-or-something- else’ bruhaha from last week, which we reported on here.
When you heard about all this drama over the bear was there a smidgen of pride in that you once again created something so lifelike?
Of course I did! Every artist wants to be noted for their work
What other textiles/materials do you use in your creation?
Skin is made from latex. We employ a variety of castings and sculpts to create a lifelike canvas. Then we use our own formulations in paints and dyes to bring it to life
What is about latex that you find especially positive (or even negative) in creating your pieces.
Every material has its pros and cons. While silicon is very lifelike it also is much more costly and involved in using and I have to pass that down to my client. Latex is a natural material and can be degraded by improper care.
I prefer to use latex out of experience with it and the cost of it making it simpler to offer affordable materials to my clients
Are there any movies/productions you can name where we may have seen your work?
Unfortunately, while we have worked in small productions and materials for TV shows we have not fully broke into the film scene as of yet. We primarily work with haunted attractions.
Do you create both bespoke and catalogue items?
Absolutely
Can you give a little bit of your background, how you got into this field professionally?
It started as a hobby 18 years ago and a side gig became the main stage. The rest is history.
What’s coming up for you and your designs for the near future? Can you reveal any specific projects you are working on?
We are always innovating something. Currently we are enjoying traveling with some of the World Oddities Expo shows
