The 2019 BET Awards treated us to one great showing of latex, lots of daring slits, bright colors, and some very wild headpieces and hats.
Those bright colors? Angela Simmons wore a rainbow-colored mini. Cardi B was in a front double-slit dress in eye-catching lime green (and later changed, as you see above, for her show-stopping performance). The men of Migos wore pastel suits (yellow, gray and baby blue respectively) with that most modern of male accessories a matching color thin strap harness. Karrueche Tran clawed her way into the event in an oversized fluorescent yellow pantsuit with extra-long sleeves and a cinched belted waist. And lastly, Ciara walked down the red carpet in a wrapped mini-dress of bold orange, although the most striking part of her wardrobe, was her dress’s billowy side train.
Leather, latex and pretty much alternative couture were represented by Lizzo, Doja Cat, Liol’ Kim, Teyana Taylor, and Rihanna.
Lizzo was in a short and tight mini, cape and sleeves, and hat and booties, the entire ensemble created in a wood grain design. The headpiece, a circular custom- made wood grain hat, created by the singer’s hairstylist Shelby Swain, was braided into Lizzo’s wood grain painted hair.
Doja Cat pranced through in frilly and fun kitty style. Her outfit dangled hot pink crocketed balls of yarn, and she accessorized with equally furry pink yarn cat ears, glasses with “Meow” frames and a neckpiece circling her sporting cat toys on wires. Next to Doja Cat Lil’ Kim’s Rufat Ismayil mini, with lace-up corset bodice was relatively sedate. But the oversized hips of her outfit made it stand out…in more ways than one. And Teyana Taylor made us all proud in her latex mini and thigh-high boots (the only latex of the night).
Presenting Mary J. Blige with a Lifetime Achievement Award, Rihanna dazzled in the all-black leather haute couture of a belted coat with bold shoulders and puffy sleeves with tight leather pants. Heading her luxury fashion label, Fenty, she certainly needs to present the very best couture when possible.
As always, Dawnamatrix appreciates all the styles on display at these award shows, with this year’s BET being some of the most fantastic.
